The CES has adopted the theme "Poverty and Affluence" for its forums in 2010.

 

1. The Theological Perspectives of Poverty and Affluence

When:       7.30 pm Wednesday 17 March

Where:      Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture

Speakers:  Professor Frank Brennan AO SJ - "Poverty & Plenty ...- Where do/should Christians stand?"

                 Rev Dr Erica Mathieson

Chair:       Rev Gregor Henderson

 

Father Frank is a Jesuit priest, a Professor of Law at the Australian Catholic University and Visiting Professorial Fellow at the University of New South Wales.  He was the founding Director of the Uniya Jesuit Social Justice Centre in Sydney; has written extensively on aboriginal land rights and, in 1995, he was awarded an Order of Australia for his services to Indigenous Australians.  In 1998, he was named a Living National Treasure, during his involvement in the Wik Debate.  Father Frank is a committed advocate for human rights, having worked tirelessly for others for over 30 years and has won a number of human rights awards. 

 

 

Erica Mathieson has been the Rector of Holy Cross Anglican Church, Hackett, since 2008. She is a visiting lecturer in pastoral studies at St Mark's Theological College, Charles Sturt University and an Honourary Associate at Macquarie University. She is a member of the Executive of the National Council of Churches in Australia and a member of the Ethics Committee of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Ophthalmologists. Prior to her current appointment she was engaged in research at Macquarie University in the fields of papyrology, early Christianity and women in antiquity.

2. Climbing out of recession on the backs of the unemployed

When:       7.30 pm Wednesday 14 April

Where:      Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture

Speakers:   Professor John Nevile and Sue Jordan

Chair:        tba

Key speaker at our April Forum will be Professor John Nevile who will address climbing out of recession, interest rates and unemployment.  John Nevile, besides being Vice-Chair of our CES, is a distinguished Australian economist. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia and a Past President of the Economics Society of Australia. He was a member of government advisory bodies during both the Hawke and Whitlam Goverments. In 2000 John received the Distinguished Fellow Medal of the Economic Society of Australia. He will discuss questions such as:

  • By how much should stimulus spending be cut?

  • Do interest rates have to rise this year?

  • what are the implications for the unemployed?

 

 

 

Sue Jordan, the CEO of St Johns Care Reid, will also speak at the forum. She will complement John's discussion of economy wide factors by giving insights into the experiences of unemployed people gained from her work at St. John's.

3. Fleeing oppression - people seeking refuge

Speakers:   Dr Kerry Murphy

Chair:        Sr. Jane Keogh

Dr Kerry Murphy will be a speaker at this forum.  Kerry is a partner with the specialist immigration law firm D’Ambra Murphy lawyers.  He is a former Jesuit Refugee Service coordinator, a student of Arabic, teaches at the ANU and is one of Australia’s top immigration lawyers recognized by last years Australian Financial Review Best Lawyer’s Survey.  He is a Federation Press author and has over 100 articles published.
